Monitoring - Groups

A group represents a user-defined set of related objects against which you want to run monitoring and reporting jobs. An object represents a storage resource, such as a computer, fabric, storage subsystem, etc.

For example, if you want to probe all of the computers in your Payroll department, create a computer group named Payroll and populate that group with the individual computers from the Payroll department. Then, whenever you want to collect information about those computers, you can simply select the computer group named Payroll when defining a monitoring job. As computers are added or removed from the Payroll department, you can simply update the Payroll computer group to reflect those changes.

Using Groups

You can use the Monitoring > Groups facility within Data Manager, Disk Manager, and Fabric Manager to define a group that corresponds to that manager. For example, use Disk Manager to create storage subsystem groups. After creating a storage subsystem group, you can include it in a probe job.

Resources can belong to only one group at a time. For example, if a computer already belongs to a computer group and you attempt to add it to a different computer group, the system will remove it from the first computer group before adding it to the new computer group (this includes removing it from the Default group if it had never been previously assigned to a user defined group). An object is only allowed in one group at a time in order to prevent it from being counted twice statistically.

Default Groups

Default groups for each storage resource are also provided within each group type node--as these resources are discovered within your enterprise via discovery and probe jobs, the resources are automatically added to the corresponding default groups. The following table lists the names of the default groups for each group type.

Creating a Group

1. Expand the Monitoring > Groups node within a manager. For example, Data Manager > Monitoring > Groups.
2. Right-click the type of group you want to create.
3. Select Create <group_type> Group from the pop-up menu. The content pane displays a window for defining the group.
4. Define information about the group in the content pane.
5. Select File > Save to save the group definition. The group you create will be available for use with your monitoring jobs, as well as probe jobs you define in the Aperi Storage Manager > Monitoring > Probes node.
