Authoring a Practice Configuration assumes that there is an established Practice Framework in place (including existing Practices) in which the configuration will reside. All practice configuration work must be performed within the architectural constraints of the framework.

To author a new practice configuration, perform the following steps:

• Define the method configuration for the practice configuration, including its purpose, scope and the practices to be included (Guideline: Defining Practice Configurations)
• Define any cross-practice processes that are to be included in the practice configuration, specifying the new method configuration as the default configuration for the processes (Guideline: Defining a Practice Configuration Cross-Practice Process)
• Define the navigation views that provide access to the elements in the practice configuration (Guideline: Defining a Practice Configuration Navigation View) 

As the practice configuration is authored, it is a good idea to publish the practice configuration and make sure the results are what you expect (Guideline: Publishing a Practice Configuration).
