Working with the Apache Log Correlation/Analyzer Sample

Introduction

This sample demonstrates the ability to analyze and correlate log files using the Hyades tools.

This sample will use a symptom database to analyze an Apache error log. In addition, a Time Based correlation will occur on the apache access log. The user can view the results of the analysis and correlation by exploring the various views within the profile perspective.

Requirements

Hyades 1.0.0 or above.


Viewing the Apache Server access.log file

  1. Click on the Profiling Monitor tab from the Profiling Perspective.
  2. Expand the Default Monitor tree view.
  3. Expand the hostname (your localhost name) tree view.
  4. Click on the child element. This element should be the access.log. The name of the element should be the location of the access log file
  5. From the pop-up menu of the selected element, select Show view > Log View.
  6. You can then click on any log records from the Log View and view the value of its properties.

Viewing the Apache error.log file

  1. Click on the Profiling Monitor tab from the Profiling Perspective.
  2. Expand the Default Monitor tree view.
  3. Expand the hostname (your localhost name) tree view.
  4. Click on the child element. This element should be the error.log. The name of the element should be the location of the error log file
  5. From the pop-up menu of the selected element, select Show view > Log View.
  6. You can then click on any log records from the Log View and view the value of its properties.

Displaying the Apache Log Interactions view

  1. Click on your hostname in the Profiling Monitor view.
  2. Select the Sequence Diagram View

Performing a Time Base correlation on the Apache Log files

  1. Click on your hostname in the Profiling Monitor view.
  2. From the pop-up menu of the hostname, select Open With > Log Interactions.
  3. Select the Correlation Schema Default Time Correlator.
  4. Click OK.
  5. In the Sequence Diagram view, you can scroll up and down to see the interactions between the two logs.
  6. Double-click on a square (log record) to get detailed information about the selected log record.

Analyzing the Apache error log records

  1. Select the error log file element within the Profiling Monitor.
  2. Now in the log view select an error log record.
  3. From the pop-up menu of a log record, select Analyze All. Log records associated with a symptom match will be indicated by a filled, blue square in the background.
  4. Click on the Analysis results tab in the Log View to view the recommendation to fix the problem.
  5. You can scroll up and down on the Log Records window to see the next analyzed log record, which is indicated by a filled, blue square in the background.
