Setting logging preferences

To set preferences and customize the Log and Trace Analyzer, select: Windows > Preferences, then choose one of the categories under Profiling and Logging.

Setting default resources

You can set which resources appear in the Profiling Monitor by default.

  1. Select Window > Preferences > Profiling and Logging > Appearance

  2. Check the resources that should appear. Click Apply.
  3. To close the Preferences window, click OK.

Customizing the Log view

You can customize the Log view by setting the timestamp, selecting sort parameters, and selecting what to display.

Setting the timestamp format

  1. Select Window > Preferences > Profiling and Logging > Log View.
  2. Select the Timestamp Format tab.
  3. Select the date and time format.  Click Apply.
  4. To close the Preferences window, click OK.

Selecting the properties for sorting

  1. Select Window > Preferences > Profiling and Logging > Log View.
  2. Select the Sort Records tab. See the list of properties (fields) of log records that are currently available and are being used to sort logs.
  3. Select the properties by which you want records sorted and move them to the Selected Properties area using the arrow controls. 
    Notes:
  4. To reorder the selected properties, click Up or Down.  The new Sort by criterion is displayed as you do this.
  5. Click Apply. The changes are applied
  6. To close the Preferences window, click OK.

To see the resorted list, click the Refresh Views button  Referesh views icon from the Profiling Monitor view.

Selecting the properties to display

  1. Select Window > Preferences > Profiling and Logging > Log View.
  2. Select the Filter Properties tab. See the list of properties (fields) of log records that are currently available and visible in the Log view.
  3. Deselect a field to filter it out from the Log view.
  4. To reorder the properties, click Up or Down.
  5. To filter out properties by severity level, deselect: Error, Warning, or Information. For example, to display only records for which the severity of the problem is error, clear the check boxes for Warning and Information so that only the Error check box is selected.
  6. Click Apply. The changes are applied
  7. To close the Preferences window, click OK.

Set trace associations

Use the Trace Associations preference page to set the Profiling and Logging views associated with a trace type and also to set the default view to open when double clicking on a profiling resource.

  1. Select Window > Preferences > Profiling and Logging > Trace Associations
  2. Under Trace types, select the resource to associate.
  3. To associate a view with the selected resource, click Add.  The Add association window appears.  Select views to associated with the resource.  Click OK.
  4. To remove an association between the selected resource and a view, select the View, then click Remove.
  5. To change the default view for the selected resource, select the view, then click Set Default.
  6. To close the Preferences window, click OK.

Logging your workbench activity

The workbench itself can create a log. 

  1. Select Window > Preferences > Profiling and Logging. 
  2. To enable or disable the workbench log, use the Enable logging checkbox.
